If you have school aged kids, then you have likely heard of the phenomenon that is Fortnite. Sometimes, I think that it is all my boys talk about and want to do with friends. To be honest, I haven’t paid a whole lot of attention to the actual game until my oldest requested it for his birthday party theme. Immediately, I started to pretend to tidy up the basement while he played to catch a glimpse of the game and of course browsed Pinterest. We decided to do a virtual zoom party because of those vulnerable around us. What a crazy year it has been! It worked out great because once the cake and presents were over, the boys started gaming together online. Each of the guests also received a supply drop before the party too.

CAKE TABLE
This dessert table is a must do for me and always the focal point of the party. I selected the colors of lime green, turquoise, royal blue and deep purple. I also wanted to incorporate the features and feels from the game with the natural elements of the greenery and faux wood backdrop. The same wood elements continued onto the table with crates and boxes, along with some novelty items like the Llama Pinata and Boogie Bombs.

SURPRISE CAKE
Have you seen the surprise cake that was featured on Shark Tank? It is the cake stand with a fun filled tube that pops up through the middle of the cake. This one had a music box that when you cranked it, it played happy birthday. Then SURPISE! The middle of the cake pops up with a gift inside. You can put items like money, candy, gift cards, or even small toys in the tube. It was a BIG hit with the birthday boy! A big thank you to our local bakery, Hall’s Takes the Cake, for letting us test run this idea. We will likely do it again for each of the boys.
TABLESCAPE
The table setting matched the rest of the party with colors and theme. We used Fortnite Battle Royal plates, royal blue dinner plates, Fortnite Napkins, and the same supply drop favors and Fortnite Cozies. The Fortnite Battle Bus doubled as a gift and centerpiece for the table.
ON THE MENU
A party is not a party without all the sugar treats. Am I right? Besides the cake previously mentioned, we also had cupcakes with dance floss toppers and sprinkles, Fortnite cookies from T’s Homemade Cookies, Chug Jug with Cozies, Cookie Cottage Cookies, candy rock suckers, Chocolate bars, chocolate nuggets, chocolate coins, and Marshmello marshmallows.
PRESENTS SUPPLY DROP
The supply drops in the game gave me a cool idea to display his presents. The idea included a wooden crate painted royal blue with the word ‘DROP’ stenciled in yellow on side. I used the circuit to make a stencil on adhesive vinyl. Once dry, I filled it with yellow paper shred and wrapped all his presents in turquoise and royal blue wrapping paper.

Since the party guests were joining virtually, we decided to deliver a ‘Supply Drop’ to each of them before the party. Each ‘Supply Drop’ box with attached yellow balloon contained a pencil axe, Fortnite Micro Nerf Gun, Nerf Darts, Medkits chocolate bar, Medkits Skittles, V-Buck chocolate coins, Chug Jug cozies with Glazier Freeze G2 (12oz), GLOW straws, GLOW stick, plate, napkin, Fortnite putty, cupcake, dance floss cupcake toppers, and V-Bucks gift card.
DONUT CAKE
Every morning on their birthday, we make up a birthday stack of pancakes or donuts and then sing Happy Birthday! Over the last year or so, I have really gotten into the whole donut cake craze. Who doesn’t love donuts for breakfast?
VIRTUAL PARTY
Since most gamers can play with each other online and there is this pandemic thing going on, it seemed like the ideal time for a zoom virtual birthday party. Once we greeted family and friends, sang Happy Birthday, and opened presents, the party friends stayed online for video games. See below for more virtual party ideas.
