DONUT Worry Back to School Breakfast

Going back to school this year will include a lot of unknowns. There is no question that things will be different with new protocols and procedures in place to keep the staff and kids safe during a pandemic. As with everyone, our kids are experiencing a little anxiety. To ease the first day jitters, we have always planned a festive Back to School Breakfast and this year it is even more important to continue the tradition.

DONUT worry you’ll have a sweet year! Donuts are a favorite around here, so this year’s theme centered around the apple donut idea. Keep reading to check out all the details of this breakfast including FREE printables to add to your Back to School breakfast too.

Table Set Up

The table set up included all the colors of school like school bus yellow, apple red, and green. I typically use a lot of the same items that I keep from year to year. However, my back to school tote had a nasty fall this spring and all my plates broke. I replaced them with fiesta plates from Macy’s. My absolute favorite spot to get Back to School decorations is the dollar bins at Target with Michaels at a close second. Each year I stroll through the dollar bin section early looking for items that I don’t already have to add to our theme and more. How is it that Target always gets you with items you weren’t shopping for too? Here is the list of where to find some of the items from our tablescape.

  • Woven Chargers – Amazon
  • Red Dinner Plates – Macy’s

School Decorations

Besides the actual table, we also decorate with banners and balloons. The banners are made from bulletin board kits that I found at Target and hung on a twine. These back to school balloon letters were my favorite. Now if only I knew the trick to be able to save these to use again next year.

Applelicious Food

This year’s theme was all about the apple. My halfway homemade apple donuts were Dunkin’ Donuts dipped in a red mixture of powdered sugar and milk. I topped them with red sprinkles, pretzel stick, and a leaf layon. The leaf layons came from a local baking supply shop called Country Kitchen SweetArt. My friend from T’s Homemade Cookies made me these adorable cookies with the back to school theme. I sent them in their lunches all week! The rest of the food included mini muffins, mini pancakes, fruity pebble yogurt, bacon, mixed berries, and apples.

FREE Printables

The apple donuts were my inspiration and I wanted to create some printable decorations around it. So I designed a sign, straw flags, and donut apple cutouts to match. All the printables can be downloaded for FREE but clicking the links.

First Day of School Gifts

Each year we give the boys something practical yet fun for their first day of school. Of course, we got all the required back to school items but these items are usually above and beyond. In the personalized boxes, there are scented colored pencils, brightly colored pencils, assortment of fun eraser shapes, hand sanitizer, mini notepads, a money filled pouch, and a Fitbit Watch. Some other gift items could be a new lunch box, water bottles, iPad cover, stylus, picture magnets, locker decorations, calculator, phone, wallet, or purse.

This year may be a little scary with all the unknowns, but you can choose ease the first day jitters with a back to school breakfast too. I hope you found inspiration here too! Be sure to share your back to school breakfast ideas in the comments. We are always looking for exciting new ways to celebrate the first day of school!
