6 Easy Ways to Transition to Winter Decor After Christmas

It’s the New Year and for most people, it means that it is time to take down the Christmas decorations.  We usually wait until New Year’s Day or the first weekend after to start.  Every year, I get the same feeling when I take it all down.  The feeling of the winter blues creeping in.  The house is bare and the celebrations have all ended.  However last year I left up a few white wintery decorations and this year I went all in with the cozy winter white decorations.  Just makes you want to snuggle up by the fire.

I am sharing 6 simple tips to transition your home from Christmas to winter cozy.  Honestly, you probably have most of these items left over from your Christmas decorations.  So head back to your storage bins to collect them after you read below.

1. Start Fresh

Now is the perfect time to start the year off with a clean slate by purging, decluttering, and organizing.  Get rid of all the things that don’t bring you joy anymore.  One of my good friends recommended Declutter Like A Mother and her strategy.  Although I didn’t follow day by day, I definitely took some good ideas and purged several areas.

2. Take Down Christmas

Remove any decorations that scream Christmas like mini replicas of Santa, signs with Christmas words, excessive garlands, stockings, Advents and more.  You probably get the idea.

3. Remove the Red

During the fall season, I use the black and white buffalo plaid with orange and pumpkin accents.  It makes an easy transition to my Christmas decorations.  The same color plaid with red accents has become my favorite combination for the holidays.  I really hope it never goes out of style.

4. Stick with Neutral Tones

Keep the colors to earthy tones of white and neutrals.  Combine these with natural elements such as birch logs, cotton florals, pine cones, faux furs, and wooden accents.  Pom-pom garlands and strings of wooden beads make great accents too.  A vase full of fresh flowers always gives me a pick me up.  Finish with inviting pillows and cozy throw blankets in baskets or laid out on the furniture.

5. Keep Out Wintery Greens

Don’t be so quick to pack away the wintery garlands and simple trees.  It doesn’t matter if they are flocked or not just no ornaments.  Some of my small trees also have warm white lights.

6. Replace Christmasy Frames

Some of the easiest and most inexpensive ways to change out decorations in a room is with free printables.  Just google a favorite saying or quote to print and refill existing frames.  Genius, I know but I can’t take credit for this idea.  I have some pretty creative friends.

Now all we need is some snow to come.  I know…I say that now but soon I will be wishing it away for spring.  All the winter white cozy decorations almost make me miss the twinkle of the Christmas lights.  Well almost!  Do you have some other ways that you make your home cozy for winter?

  1. Your decorations are so beautiful! I love the idea of keeping buffalo plaid as the main style and changing out the colors based on the seasons.

  2. Very pretty style! I decided to decorate at the beginning of the season with things that could stay as “winter decor” once the things that were Christmas were put away. I had more items for the whole season than I do items that are Christmas-only items. I love the winter florals even once Christmas is over, so some long floral picks I am planning on moving from the tree to vases and pitchers.

My favorite color is red, so using red is all winter here and Christmas, too. I love it so much, I do not remove it until spring decorating. I like the soft neutral after Christmas look, but I do stick with red anyway. Lol.

I think key to cozy here with or without the tree and Christmas decorations has been layering soft throws, the wintry florals (whatever type you like), candles, and the fireplace (mine is electric, but in an old apartment I turned on the TV to a fireplace video). My dog is also key. She is pretty snuggly!
